The Ghana Institute of Procurement and Supply (GIPS) is drafting a new bill to regulate and monitor the work of procurement officers in the country. The Procurement Practicing Bill aims to prevent revenue leakages and protect the public purse by ensuring only licensed individuals operate as procurement officers.
GIPS President, Simon Annan has stressed that the importance of proper procurement practices, noting that it accounts for 70% of the national budget. He highlighted the need to address procurement-related corruption and infractions, which have led to significant losses in the country.
The bill is part of a collaboration between GIPS and the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) to tackle procurement-related issues. GIPS will provide capacity building for EOCO investigators, while EOCO will input on the draft bill to ensure effective regulation.
EOCO’s Executive Director, Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah, expressed support for the collaboration, emphasizing the need for investigators to understand procurement issues to yield effective results.
